My Halloween TBR!

Hey guys so in case you didn't know, I completely LOVE the season of fall. It's not too hot, not too cold, and I don't get allergies like I do in the spring time! Plus the colors are so beautiful. So, I wanted to make a Halloween TBR because I love spooky stories and I also feel that this is probably the only season you can really make one for. I mean, I can't really think of many Christmas stories or anything. But if you know of any, I'd love to hear about them :). This really is just a list of books that I'm planning on reading in the month of October so I'll be in the Halloween mood! Also, these are in no particular order!

1. Daughters Unto Devils: Amy Lukavics

2. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #1): Ransom Riggs

3. Slasher Girls and Monster Boys: Anthology from different authors, edited by April Genevieve Tucholke

4. Hollow City (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #2)

5. Sweet: Emmy Laybourne

6. Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1): Richelle Mead

7.  The Diviners: Libba Bray

8. Hemlock Grove: Brian McGreevy

9. Hemlock (Hemlock, #1): Kathleen Peacock

So, have you read any of these? Did you like them? I'm super excited to get to them! Some of them I just received and some I've had for a while so it's due time for a scary book marathon.

Waiting on Wednesday #15

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Jocelyn's Waiting On:

The Love That Split the World: Emily Henry
Publication Date: January 26th, 2016

Synopsis:

Natalie Cleary must risk her future and leap blindly into a vast unknown for the chance to build a new world with the boy she loves.

Natalie’s last summer in her small Kentucky hometown is off to a magical start... until she starts seeing the “wrong things.” They’re just momentary glimpses at first—her front door is red instead of its usual green, there’s a pre-school where the garden store should be. But then her whole town disappears for hours, fading away into rolling hills and grazing buffalo, and Nat knows something isn’t right.

That’s when she gets a visit from the kind but mysterious apparition she calls “Grandmother,” who tells her: “You have three months to save him.” The next night, under the stadium lights of the high school football field, she meets a beautiful boy named Beau, and it’s as if time just stops and nothing exists. Nothing, except Natalie and Beau.

So, I don't even know what this is about really but the description looks strange and I love strange books! It is pitched at "Friday Night Lights meets The Time Travelers Wife". Well - I love time travel and LOOK at that cover!

Cassie's Waiting On:

The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins
Publication Date: March 8, 2016

Synposis:

The Great HuntKill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Wendy Higgins is a favorite author of mine, and this is right up my alley.  She has written many great books, most notably The Sweet Evil Series.  She knows how to write a good book boyfriend, so I'm ready to add Paxton to that ever-growing list.  Plus, that cover is just gorgeous!

Rainbow Rowell continues to break boundaries with Carry On, an epic fantasy following the triumphs and heartaches of Simon and Baz from her beloved bestseller Fangirl.

His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.

About Rainbow Rowell

RAINBOW ROWELL writes books. Sometimes she writes about adults (Landline and Attachments). Sometimes she writes about teenagers (Eleanor & Park, Fangirl, and Carry On). But she always writes about people who talk a lot. And people who feel like they're screwing up. And people who fall in love. When she's not writing, Rainbow is reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing about things that don't really matter in the big scheme of things. She lives in Nebraska with her husband and two sons.

Book Review: Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4)

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4) by Sarah J. Maas
Publication Date: September 1, 2015

The queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she's at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past . . .

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen's triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series contrinues Celaena's epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

Long review time guys, so buckle up and enjoy!

I can't even begin to tell you how amazing this book is. I'm sure you've heard this by now, but it truly is. At first, I was a little worried because this is a whopper of a book, coming in at 656 pages. I was very concerned that the book might drag, or...and I would hate to say it...be boring. But I had nothing to fear, as this was 656 pages of thrills, adventure, pain, love, and growth. Sarah J. Maas has delivered yet another astonishing novel that you will want to get your hands on as soon as possible. Every single scene blew me away, and I relished every word on the page. Sarah J. Maas has such a unique talent, a talent that allows the reader to become so immersed in the world that she has created that it feels that they are part of the book. I feel like these characters that I have read about over the past 3 books and collection of novellas, have become part of my life. Their heartbreaks are my heartbreaks, and their joys are my joys. Quite simple, every time I pick up a book in this series, I feel like I'm coming home. And very few authors are able to achieve this.

Celaena is gone, and Aelin has finally accepted her past and her role in becoming a leader and a Queen. While she is the same, she is different, and this is a very important thing to note. Even though she is no longer the "assassin," she still has no problem killing or getting rid of those in her way. Aelin is not as ruthless as Celaena was, but still a badass woman that takes no prisoners. She is out for revenge, and no one will prevent her from doing just that. The one thing that was absolutely fascinating for me while reading this book was to reflect on just how far Aelin has come in this series. The amount of character development for her is quite simply something of beauty and something to admire. In some ways, you actually feel like you aren't reading about the same person anymore because she is so different and has come so far since the first novel. She fully embraces her role as Queen of Terrasen, but she remembers and respects her past and those who have played a role in getting her to where she is today. Many people have shaped Aelin into the person she is now, and while they might not all have been the best of influences, they have all made her into a strong leader that is willing to fight until her very last breath for her people.

The other aspect of this book that I absolutely loved was how much of her past came back into the spotlight. Not just things she did in the past, but also the people. Arobynn Hamel is a very prevalent character in this novel, and I loved every scene between Aelin and him. He has played a major role in shaping her into the fierce warrior she is now, and I can see why Celaena loved him in her own way.

I was very interested to see where Sarah J. Maas would take Aelin and Chaol's relationship. Let's just say I went through a couple of stages of anger, disbelief, and then fury when Chaol came onto the scene. Not because of how Sarah J. Maas wrote it (in fact I thought it was so realistic and the perfect way to go about their relationship), but because of Chaol acted. I knew that he wouldn't be happy, but by God Chaol, man up a bit! I seriously wanted to smack him for a good majority of this book, and kept wanting to tell him to get over himself. However, this being said, I understood why he acted the way he did. I admire his dedication to Dorian, and I can't blame Chaol for wanting to try every possible way before doing the worst thing he could ever imagine. Have no fear though, he and Aelin finally come together, and make amends. I think that both of them are in a better place now in terms of their relationship, and fully understand each other. They have a loyalty and bond to each other that is hard to break.

Dorian, my beloved Dorian, goes through so much in this book. I can't say too much on him because I don't want to spoil anything in regards to his character. However, I will say this...Sarah J. Maas did an excellent job with his character, and set his story up very well for the next book in this series. Dorian is going to be facing some major struggles in the fifth book in this series, but with Chaol and Aelin at his side, he'll be able to conquer anything that comes his way.

And finally there is Rowan. Let me just tell you, I was extremely excited when I heard that Rowan was getting his own POV in this book. I think his perspective was crucial to the story, and it let us in on how his head works. I love him even more after this book, and from the very moment he enters this book, your love for him just escalates. There are some truly breathtaking and beautiful scenes between him and Aelin and they brought a tear to my eyes sometimes. The protectiveness that both Rowan and Aelin have for each other is yet another admirable aspect of this book, and they have quite the development towards the end of this book. I'll just let your imagination run wild with the possibilities ;)

While I wasn't the biggest fan of Manon's POV in the last book, I actually greatly enjoyed it in this novel. Perhaps it was because there was more action and development with her character, but I loved her fierceness in this book. There is one particular scene where Aelin and Manon meet, that is AMAZING. The epicness that is that chapter is just mind-blowing. And then there are a couple scenes when she meets a certain person. That certain person makes her realize that there is something more to life than being a bloodthirsty witch. I'm so excited to see where this aspect of the story goes because I think it's bloody brilliant!!!

Overall, this was such an amazing installment in the Throne of Glass series, and sets up the fifth book in the series very well. There are endless possibilities in which Sarah J. Maas could take this story, and I am so excited and eager to see what happens next! Just a little bit of good news...there is NO CLIFFHANGER! Let us all thank the gods above that this happened because I don't know what I would have done if there was a brutal cliffhanger like we all know Sarah J. Maas can write. Check this book out as soon as you can because this is not to be missed!

Happy reading :)

Book Review: I Crawl Through It

I Crawl Through It: A.S. King
Publication Date: September 22nd, 2015

Four teenagers are on the verge of exploding. The anxieties they face at every turn have nearly pushed them to the point of surrender: senseless high-stakes testing, the lingering damage of past trauma, the buried grief and guilt of tragic loss. They are desperate to cope, but no one is listening.

So they will lie. They will split in two. They will turn inside out. They will even build an invisible helicopter to fly themselves far away...but nothing releases the pressure. Because, as they discover, the only way to truly escape their world is to fly right into it.

"Our big explosion is coming any day now. Can't you hear the ticking?"

I really love weird books. For example, Challenger Deep was really weird but at the same time meaningful and I absolutely adored it. This is another weird book. I feel like I sort of understood it but then again I'm still kind of confused on some parts. That could be the whole point of it, I don't really know! Regardless, it was definitely a refreshing mix up to the sometimes mundane contemporaries. I still enjoyed the book, even though at some of the parts I found myself like:

"We could have been so much more, but no one would let us fly."

So we find ourselves following the lives of 4 highschoolers. We have Gustav who is building an invisible helicopter that only he can see except Stanzi who can only see it on Tuesdays. Stanzi's parents take her on vacation all the time … but only to sites of previous school shootings. Pleasant, right? Then we have Landsdale. She loves to lie and every time she does her hair grows longer and longer. Basically Pinocchio with hair. Then there's China. She swallowed herself. That's right she occasionally refers to herself as some part of the digestive system, even a rectum. What do they all have in common? Hmm my jury's still out on that. They are all friends? They are all messed up? They all have test anxiety? These are the questions about the book that confuse me!

So it's not that I didn't like the book, because I obviously did! It's just that I still don't know if I understand all of the euphemisms and metaphorical language. We never quite find out Stanzi's name. Stanzi is the one with PTSD and it took me awhile to group who has what according to the description of the book. Maybe if I reread it knowing what I know now that I will be able to grasp some of the things more. Ok - so like I said you have China, Landsdale, Stanzi, and Gustav. I get China and Stanzi's issues. But I don't really know what Gustav's issue was? Was he the test anxiety person? Why was The Bush Man normal until he left that place with geniuses and no departures? Why did he start handing out letters in exchange for kisses? I wish these questions would have been answered more or I wish I had A.S. King's phone number and I could just text her and be like "Hey what did you mean by this?". Or maybe even a SparkNotes because right all on my own I'm like:

"I am China - the girl who swallowed herself.
I just opened my mouth one day and wrapped it around my ears and the rest of me. Now I live inside myself.
I can knock on my rib cage when it's time to go to bed. I can squeeze my own heart. When I fart, no one else can smell it.
I write poems."

So even though this was a really weird novel and I still don't know what some of the things mean, I'm glad I read it. It's super unique and I think any story that isn't generic will keep my interests. Do you know what I mean? There are so many novels out now and they seem to almost be like carbon copies of each other! I probably would have liked them better if they were published 10 years ago, when there weren't 5 other books like them. This isn't like that, ok? It's 100% original! I've never read anything like it before. So if you're in the mood for a strange book that's nothing like you've ever read before and you're just sick of the run of the mill contemporaries - this is a perfect book for you!

Thank you to The Novl for providing this book in exchange for my honest review.

Book Review: Oblivion (Nevermore #3)

Oblivion (Nevermore #3) by Kelly Creagh
Publication Date: July 28, 2015

This electrifying conclusion to the Nevermore trilogy takes one last trip to the dream world of Edgar Allan Poe to reveal the intertwined fates of Isobel and Varen.

The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? —Edgar Allan Poe

The fine line between life and death blurred long ago for Isobel Lanley. After a deadly confrontation with Varen in the dreamworld, she’s terrified to return to that desolate and dangerous place. But when her nightmares resume, bleeding into reality, she is left with no choice. Varen’s darkness is catching up to her. To everything. Threatening to devour it all.

Isobel fears for her world. For her sanity and Varen’s—especially after a fresh and devastating loss. To make matters worse, the ghostly demon Lilith wants Varen for her own, and she will do anything to keep him in her grasp—anything.

Can Isobel ever find her happy ending? Worlds collide and fates are sealed in this breathtaking finale to the Nevermore trilogy.

It's been 3 years since Enshadowed came out. Suffice to say, I've been longing for this book to come into the world. Almost every single month I would check for any updates on this book, and I kept seeing the date pushed back more and more. Well, it's finally here, and let me say, this book was simply amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this series, and the wait was well worth it. Everything about this book was perfection, and I flew through the pages needing to know how everything was going to be resolved. While I didn't necessarily want this book to end (after all, who wants to say goodbye to characters they fell in love with more than 5 years ago?), I needed to know who was going to make it out alive and if Isobel and Varen would end up together.

This series has always held a special place in my heart because I am the hugest Edgar Allan Poe fan. I have a great admiration for Ms. Creagh as the amount of research and dedication that was put into this story is something of wonder and awe. She deserves a HUGE round of applause for her efforts, and they paid off fantastically. Kelly Creagh's writing has such a poetic quality to it. She mixes weird, dark, and gothic together so well, and the result is a hauntingly beautiful story that blows your mind. In some ways, her writing is so eerily similar to that of Poe's that you have to stop and remember this isn't one of his works. The way she describes every single aspect of the setting and atmosphere makes you feel as if Edgar Allan Poe's story have come to life and you are in them. Nothing is ever as it seems in this story, and there are so many twists and turns, your head will spin...and you love every single freaky second of it.

One of my favorite parts of this story (and series in general) is Ms. Creagh's characters. Varen is not your typical male character. He isn't some hunky, swoonworthy guy that makes you drool. He's creepy, weird, and one giant mystery. While you don't originally think you'll like him, he draws you in and never lets you go. He is a very dark and haunting character, and unlike anything you will ever read. Varen has many different sides to him, and while he hides behind a bitter mask, Varen is truly a person that is vulnerable and frightened by the world that has sucked him in and gripped him in a hold so tight, he doesn't see anyway out. He is the epitome of a tortured soul, in more ways than one. Isobel has grown into such a strong, fierce lead character. While she wasn't my favorite at first in Nevermore, she quickly became a favorite of mine and holds a special place in my heart. Isobel will go to any and all lengths to rescue Varen from the evil that holds him in her clutches. She was so brave and full of compassion, and you could see how much more responsible and mature she is now, as compared to the first book.

If you miss out on this wonderful series, you are missing out on something extremely special and amazing. With breathtaking descriptions and extraordinary writing, this is a winner on all sides. This will please fans of Edgar Allan Poe, and even make some new ones. You will be so intrigued by everything that you will want to go out and read all about Poe. I am incredibly sad to see this series come to an end, but it went out on a high-note and will always have a very special place in my heart. I can't wait to see what Ms. Creagh writes next!

Happy reading :)

Waiting on Wednesday #14

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Jocelyn's Waiting On:

Passenger (Passenger, #1): Alexandra Bracken
Publication Date: January 5th, 2016

Synopsis:
passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever

Even though I have yet to read The Darkest Minds trilogy, I have heard nothing but amazing things about Alexandra Bracken. This is definitely looking like historical fantasy to me, which I have been loving lately! I have extremely high hopes for this one.

Cassie's Waiting On:

Restoration (The Revelation Series #5) by Randi Cooley Wilson
Publication Date: November 30, 2015

Synopsis:

Would You Run
Would You Fight
Would You Fall To Fate

Eve Collins will do anything to save those she loves, especially her gargoyle protector and mate, Asher St. Michael. With the world crumbling down around them, Eve and Asher must face the final battle between darkness and light. One that will end in great sacrifice.

When the skies darken and love in it’s truest form is tested, would you run? When death becomes silence and battle lines are drawn, would you fight? If you had to sacrifice, to save the one you loved, would you fall to fate? Would you dare to let it go?

The End, Begins.

I've been a huge fan of this series ever since it came out.  It's so original and fun, plus Randi's writing is phenomenal (I wrote a review for the 4th book in the series if you want to check it out).  I'm going to be heartbroken that this series is ending, but fans can look forward to a spin-off series next!

Book Review: Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements #3)

Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: July 28, 2015

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

This is going to be a difficult review to write without spoiling the book, but I'll do the best I can. But I'm going to have to be vague with some parts. As I always say, Jen never ceases to amaze me with her wonderful writing ability. The final book in The Dark Elements Series is absolutely breathtaking and heart-stopping. All of our questions are answered and the story moves very quickly. We are thrown right back into Layla, Roth, and Zayne's world and it's nonstop action and craziness from there on out. The book picks up right where we left off in the previous novel, Stone Cold Touch, Sam was discovered to be the Lilin (or at least the body of Sam), and Lilith is trying to break free to bring the apocalypse.

“No one is destined for anything. We control our own fates.”

One of my favorite aspects of any Jen Armentrout novel is her characters. She always manages to write and describe her characters flawlessly, and have her characters seem like you've known them all your life. Because of this, her characters feel like your friends, and Jen makes you feel so emotionally connected to them. You just want to make everything okay for them, and give them a hug now and then. Layla has been the perfect female lead from the get go. She has always been strong and fights for those she cares about most. Layla experiences so much growth in this novel, and she has matured into such an amazing woman. While she was responsible before, she is even more responsible in this one, and she makes decisions that are best for everyone. She knows what she has to do, and she does it. Remember that ;) Roth is as swoonworthy (and drool-worthy) as ever. He is his normal bad, bad self, but we also see so much more from him in this installment. Layla is finally able to get under that tough outer shell to the person Roth really is inside. While he's a demon through and through, at the end of the day, Roth is also very human. Zayne was also as wonderful as ever, and he fights for Layla with everything he has. I have always admired Zayne, and he is stronger than ever in this one (especially with all the things thrown his way).

“Stop being a coward and let go of the past. Embrace the future, because they are two very different things.”

While some people are bound to be upset by who Layla chooses, I know plenty of people will also be very, very happy. I was jumping for joy, and at the end of the day, it's obvious that she made the right choice. Layla knew who she wanted all along, and she stuck with that decision. She handled the "love triangle" that arose very maturely. She chooses early on in the book, which I greatly appreciated, because I don't think I could have dealt with her going back and forth for the entire novel.

“When is there ever a right time to fully give your heart to another?
There are always going to be obstacles. You just have to decide which ones are worth it.”

The action is phenomenal and the pacing of this novel is fantastic. I loved the new characters that we got to meet (*cough*Grim*cough*) and I never wanted this book to end. While I can't say I'm particularly happy about Bambi, this is an amazing ending to this series. I'm extremely sad that it's over, but I can't wait to see what Jen has next for us fans! If you are a fan of this series, read this as soon as possible. You don't want to miss out on a book that will take away every last breath!

Happy reading :)
