ARC Review: Firsts

About The Book:

  Title: Firsts
  Author: Laurie Elizabeth Flynn
  Pub. Date: January 5th, 2016
  Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
  Pages: 320
  Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Sexuality
  Rate: 3/5 stars

Synopsis :

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

Review:

This book was one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. I was looking forward to all of the sexual positivity hype that was surrounding it. However, it did end up falling a little flat for me. I didn't experience as much of that positivity I wanted and I felt like I was experiencing more of a negativity. However, I did still enjoy it and I thought that it had some great friendship themes in it.

“These things always get out, sooner or later."

Mercedes - how exactly did I feel about her? It's hard to tell. I just couldn't understand her way of thinking. I could never understand how she processed in her mind why sleeping with guys girlfriends was a good idea. She says it was a scientific equation, but did she ever account for error? It really was mind boggling. I can understand that her first time was pretty shitty, but didn't she ever think that maybe her first time was an exception and that's not what usually happens? *sigh*. Honestly, I think she just really has poor social skills. However, I really liked her friends Faye and Zach. They were SUCH well-written characters and very, very likable. I'm still not sure about Angela. If you can't tell your best friend the truth about yourself, then can you really say you two are best friends?

I definitely think the friendships in this book were my favorite thing about it. It showed that you should stay by your friends even when they make some crazy life decisions. Another important lesson I think that this book taught was that you not only need to tell your friends when they are making stupid choices, but stick with them when they are trying to change for the better. However, I didn't really understand the semi-lesbian thoughts about Mercy's friend, Faye. I don't think it was conducive to the story, especially since I don't think the story was ever questioning the sexual orientation of Mercedes. The other thing I also had a slight problem with was the timing of the reveal for why Mercedes first time was so bad for her. I think that if it was revealed a little bit earlier I could have related more to her, instead it was revealed at the last possible moment.

"Why do you even like me?" I say."I'm selfish and dishonest and
all I do is push people away. I wouldn't even want to be my friend."

I ended up giving this book 3/5 stars because while I think this story was fun and portrayed important messages about friendship, I couldn't really connect to Mercedes. I'd recommend Firsts to those looking for a mature YA contemporary or to those who are interested in reading a book about a great friendship!

Thank you to St. Martin's Griffin for providing
this book in exchange for my honest review

Movie Thoughts: Mockingjay Part 2

So this is it - the end of The Hunger Games saga. The Hunger Games was one of the first books that got me into YA - I read it about 8 years ago and when I heard it was becoming a movie and told EVERYONE … nobody cared (until it came out, of course). So what does it mean when you a read a book series before it becomes a popular movie? Honestly, not much. I've been nothing but disappointed when I read books first. I loved watching The Hunger Games unfold, but I didn't agree with the casting and some character portrayals, so that was a big turn off for me. The two book series that I've read before they were even optioned for a movie was The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner. While I actually agree with The Maze Runner casting, there was still something different. Now, I watched True Blood before I read the Sookie Stackhouse books and I think it made me appreciate the books even more. I also watched the Divergent movie before I read the entire trilogy. I loved the trilogy (even the ending), but after watching the movie Insurgent and the trailer for Allegiant - I feel like I almost don't recognize what I'm watching. Another thing about watching the movie first or even seeing casting first, is that you will see those characters more as the characters who are already casted which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing.

Am I sad that The Hunger Games is over? Of course. It was the first book that got me into YA. Will I get over it? Of course. There are so many great books that I loved just as much that were optioned for movies. However, I just don't know that any will live up to the emotion.

Characters:

Since this is my first post on movie thoughts, I thought I'd just talk a little bit how I felt about the casting throughout the entire movie saga. I'm focusing only on Katniss, Peeta, and Gale because I thought they are what influences most people's opinions.

Katniss:

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence as an actress and I think she did an amazing job in all three of The Hunger Games movies. Yet, she just wasn't who I pictured as Katniss. I think she was a little too old to play her. Also, as I'm sure this is more of the directors discretion, but in the movie I feel like they were trying so hard to drill home that SHE was the symbol of the rebellion and pushing the "I am woman, hear me roar" complex, and in consequence, they made her almost manly in her actions. She wasn't like that in the books, she relied on Peeta and Gale and it wasn't her constantly taking care of everyone around her. In turn, I thought that it made Peeta and Gale look less manly.

Movie Katniss:

My image of Katniss

Peeta:
I was expecting more of someone like this to portray book Peeta:

Instead, I got this:

Overall, I thought they made Peeta wayyyyy to feminine in the movie. He still played the nice guy, but he was too nice. I felt like he often had to depend on Katniss to get him out of trouble in the games, and that was never how it was in the books. I thought Peeta held his own in the books and could definitely take care of himself. Basically, I thought the movies did him a huge injustice, making him look like, excuse my crude language, a super weenie.

Gale:

Well, at least they got one right! In my opinion, the casting of Gale was awesome. However, his portrayal in Mockingjay part 2 was off. In Mockingjay, don't you think that Gale was crazy obsessed with war? So much so, it really caused me to stop caring about him in the books. That never happened for me in the movies. He was never that same guy that cared more about war than Katniss or her family. It made it even harder for me to root for movie Peeta and Katniss.

Plot:

As far as the plot of Mockingjay Part 2, I felt like it didn't make much sense to split the last book into two separate movies. Nonetheless, like Mockingjay Part 1, the movie had a dragging feeling to it. I don't understand why these movie companies keep trying to milk book series for all they're worth, especially when it really is impacting the quality of the movie!

Book Accuracy:

I thought Mockingjay Part 2 was more accurate to the book than part 1. I'm glad they more or less stuck to the book plot line and especially stayed true to the ending. However, there are two death scenes in particular that I think were done poorly. If you read the book, you probably know what death scenes are the saddest. I was expecting to cry because these characters meant a lot to me in the books and the movies, but I was like "are you kidding me"? I didn't think they gave adequate attention to their deaths at all.

Overall I gave Mockingjay Part 2 a 3.5/5 stars because I thought it was a little better than the book, but Mockingjay was my still least favorite part of the trilogy - book and movie.

Book Review: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

About The Book:

Title: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
  Author: Becky Albertalli
  Pub. Date: April 7th, 2015
  Publisher: Balzer + Bray
  Pages: 303
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, LGBT, Romance
  Rate: 4/5 stars

Synopsis :

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

Review:

My reaction to this book is an astounding AWWWE. It was soooo cute. I feel like I'm one of the last to read this book, so if you've read it already then you know what I'm talking about! This book has irresistible characters with a modern plot line. Becky Albertalli is extremely talented and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is undeniably a game changer for LGBT books.

“Why is straight the default? Everyone should have to declare one way or another,
and it shouldn't be this big awkward thing whether your staring, gay, bi, or whatever"

I loved Simon. I wasn't a fan of the other characters in the book as much, but I just think that's because I loved Simon so much. He was quirky and crazy awesome and not only because he loves Harry Potter and Oreo cookies. I also really liked Simon's parents. I thought they were really down to earth yet at the same time cared about Simon and his life. It's really hard to find interactive parents in YA books because more often than not they are dead or die in a traumatic way to aid in the main character's development. I mean, am I one of the only ones who noticed that theme? The romance was so cute. You obviously don't find out till closer to the end who "Blue" is. But when you do, it's just one of the cutest things! I genuinely felt happy when I found out. The e-mails between Simon and Blue were one of my favorite things about the book, even though I feel like texts would have been more fun ;). But clearly that wouldn't have worked considering Blue was secretive.

“He talked about the ocean between people.
And how the whole point of everything is to find a shore worth swimming to. "

So I don't really know what else to say about this book! This is a book that you have to read for yourself to see what it's like. This book probably won't go in my book as a favorite for me but that's just because contemporary books are not typically my go-to genre. And the ones that are my favorite are usually very dark contemporaries. However, I still absolutely loved this book and I thought it was so adorable. Becky Albertalli handles coming out with the grace of a seasoned author. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a no-brainer for lovers of contemporary and refreshingly light for those impartial to contemporary.

Author Interview:

What has been your favorite part of writing this series?

There are so many things I’ve loved. In general, it’s been very carthartic writing The Revelation Series. I’ve loved every minute of writing Asher and Eve as a couple. My favorite scenes to write though are the realm jumping and world building. Stepping back, I think my ultimate favorite part of writing The Revelation Series is combining paranormal and fantasy elements that have new twists and worlds, with sexy and epically romantic moments.

Where is the weirdest place you have gotten your inspiration from (or the weirdest place inspiration suddenly hit)?

Um...the weirdest place I’ve been inspired. That’s tricky. I’m not sure I’m ready to share - lol.

What type of genre would you never write?

Math. Or maybe self-help. I hate to say never, but I suck at both topics.

Who is your favorite couple that you've written?

This is a loaded question - lol. Of course I loved writing Eve and Asher from The Revelation Series. I’m also really loving writing Stone and Hope the two main characters from my new Dark Soul series. It’s difficult to pick a favorite because each couple are special in their own right to both the story and me.

Waiting on Wednesday #23

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Jocelyn's Waiting On:

The Last Star (The 5th Wave, #3) : Rick Yancey
Publication Date: May 24th, 2016

Synopsis:

We’re here, then we’re gone, and that was true before they came. That’s always been true. The Others didn’t invent death; they just perfected it. Gave death a face to put back in our face, because they knew that was the only way to crush us. It won’t end on any continent or ocean, no mountain or plain, jungle or desert. It will end where it began, where it had been from the beginning, on the battlefield of the last beating human heart.

Master storyteller Rick Yancey invokes triumph, loss, and unrelenting action as the fate of the planet is decided in the conclusion to this epic series.

Even though I wasn't a fan of The Infinite Sea, which was the second book in the trilogy, I have high hopes for the last book. I'm hoping for more of Cassie's point of view instead of Ringer's. And I'm also excited to see how things end up for everyone, especially since Rick said he isn't afraid to kill his MC's. Why do I have a gut feeling that Evan is going to die? :(

Cassie's Waiting On:

Paper and Fire (The Great Library #2) by Rachel Caine
Publication Date: July 5, 2016

Synopsis:

Paper and Fire (The Great Library, #2)With an iron fist, The Great Library controls the knowledge of the world, ruthlessly stamping out all rebellion, forbidding the personal ownership of books in the name of the greater good.

Jess Brightwell has survived his introduction to the sinister, seductive world of the Library, but serving in its army is nothing like he envisioned. His life and the lives of those he cares for have been altered forever. His best friend is lost, and Morgan, the girl he loves, is locked away in the Iron Tower and doomed to a life apart.

Embarking on a mission to save one of their own, Jess and his band of allies make one wrong move and suddenly find themselves hunted by the Library’s deadly automata and forced to flee Alexandria, all the way to London.

But Jess’s home isn’t safe anymore. The Welsh army is coming, London is burning, and soon, Jess must choose between his friends, his family, or the Library willing to sacrifice anything and anyone in the search for ultimate control…

I greatly enjoyed the first book in this series, Ink and Bone, so I have high hopes for this sequel!  Rachel Caine created an exciting world, and I hope to learn even more about it in this novel.  I can't wait to see where she takes the story because I have no idea what to expect!

Review:
I'll admit it, I've never read the Grisha Trilogy...I know, I know, it's terrible. Suffice to say, I'm definitely reading the entire trilogy as soon as I'm able. With all the hype surrounding this book, I was a bit afraid to start it. It's happened to me before where everyone is loving and raving about a book and when I read it, I don't see what everyone is talking about. But, if you couldn't tell by my rating, this book is AMAZING!

This story has 6 main characters and 5 different POVs, which for some readers might seem daunting, but Ms. Bardugo's writing is absolutely perfect and these different POVs are handled in an expert way that doesn't cause any confusion. In the hands of a less skilled author, this book could have easily been a complete mess, but Ms. Bardugo made each character so unique and flawlessly flawed that you loved reading from every perspective. I actually didn't have a favorite perspective because I loved all of these characters equally! Each of the 6 main characters has their own voice, personality, and wicked traits that you can't help but fall in love with. While some of the characters you don't want to like, you find yourself loving them anyway. It takes an extraordinarily talented author to do this, and Ms. Bardugo definitely has this talent.

This is set in the same world as the Grisha Trilogy, but if you're like me and never read the original series, you need not worry at all as there is no confusion. Things are well explained and while I might have missed some extras thrown in for fans of the first series, I still loved every aspect of this world. It is so intriguing, and is very dark and gritty. The one thing I greatly enjoyed was how well Ms. Bardugo blended real world elements with the supernatural. There's plenty of exciting action with street gangs competing for territory to breaking a convict out of prison, all mixed with sweeping, epic fantasy. Every scene is well described and the book plays out like a movie in front of your eyes.

While I'm not always the biggest fan of third-person (I think it takes a certain story and a certain type of author to be able to pull this off well), this story was perfect for the third-person-POV. I honestly completely forgot it was in third-person because I felt such a immense connection to each character. My problem with third-person is that you sometimes can't get that connection with the character and don't get to know them that well. But one of the reasons it worked so well in this book is that it allowed you to constantly be surprised by what was going to happen next. It also allowed almost every main character to be represented equally.

Definitely check this out if you are looking for an epic fantasy that is fast-paced and action-packed. You will not regret reading this, and this will easily become one of your favorite books of 2015. I can't wait for the next book in the series, Crooked Kingdom, and I can't wait to check out more from Ms. Bardugo!!

Happy reading :)

ARC Review: This Raging Light

About The Book:

  Title: This Raging Light
  Author: Estelle Laure
  Pub. Date: December 22nd, 2015
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
  Pages: 288
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Realistic Fiction, Mental Health
  Rate: 4/5 stars

Synopsis :

Can the best thing happen at the worst time?

Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she's about to experience when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend's brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure's soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.

Review:

Now lately, I've made a habit of only requesting books that I really, really want to read. I'm talking want to read so bad that I stalk the author's Twitter and other social networks on a weekly basis until the book comes out. I immediately fell in love with the description of this book because it's not every day that you see a mature girl with so many responsibilities in a YA book, so I knew I couldn't wait to read it.

The story takes place after Lucille and Wren's mom already left town. This would be hard for any single parent, let alone a teenage girl with a ton of other responsibilities to take care of a little girl. Their mom sends them $100 every month in the mail because I guess she thinks that's enough to take care of a household? Obviously not! Lucille has to get a part-time job at a restaurant whilst going to school full-time and taking care of Wren. Wren is a doll. She obviously knows something is going on - and her mom isn't just on "vacation" as she claims. She's ridiculously smart and I feel so bad for her that she really never had a functioning household to grow up in. At the same time - Lucille is trying to do the best she can but she's only one person. Her best friend tries to help with babysitting Wren as much as she can but she has things to do as well, which is understandable. They are in high school, they have stuff to do, extracurricular activities - I remember how it was. Well, that's when her twin Digby steps up and offers to help with babysitting Wren. And that's also when things start to get pretty messy.

"Explain to me what the point of living is if you aren't willing to
fight for the truths in your heart, to risk getting hurt. You have to rage."

This was a romance that I really liked because I felt it was very realistic. I know a lot of people are going to have problems with it, though. Why? Because Digby Jones has a girlfriend when he starts coming onto Lucille and it does get into the cheating territory. But people - you all have to realize that cheating does sometimes happen! And we read books to know that we are not alone and to help us go through pivotal life moments. Anyway - I loved this because I felt like I never really knew what Digby's intentions were. He was being a really great guy and helping Lucille around the house with things, but at the same time he had a girlfriend and wouldn't leave her. I think he was almost conflicted with himself and that is so realistic because he's in high school.  How many high school guys do you know who have their entire life made up and it actually works out that way? Probably not that many. Digby Jones is conflicted between what he knows is safe/what he should want and what is foreign to him and he wants to explore more. All in all, Digby Jones was very swoon worthy and I really did enjoy their romance.

"How does a barely noticeable star become your very own sun?"

My only complaint about the story was that I felt it ended kind of abruptly. However, to be fair the entire book is about 280 pages so that is a lot of plot to cover in a short amount of time. The story really never seemed rushed so it wasn't a matter of that. Around 30 pages from the end, I found myself getting worried about how things would end. It was like - "ok there's no way all of the things I want reconciled will have a chance to be". So, I was ultimately kind of put off by that, but that is my only complaint about the book. And before you are mislead - it wasn't that the entire plot of the book was unresolved. I felt that Lucille's personal conflicts with herself resolved very realistically - it was more the social conflicts I thought could have ended differently.

Overall, I thought this story was an amazing contemporary novel. There are so many times that you will  wonder how parents could do this to their children and this story will probably make you realize how lucky you have things compared to some other people. Yes, there is a lot of struggling and heartache in this novel but there is also a lot of celebration of life and love as well. It is a must read for any contemporary fan, so I highly recommend picking this book up!

Review:

"Tell me that you still want to be here.

Tell me that you still see a future for us.
Tell me that you love me.”

Jen Armentrout is a master of writing. There hasn't been a book of hers that I haven't adored, and wanted to read over and over again. But with the Wait for You series, Jen truly has showed her supreme talents as an author. She never fails to make me fall so deeply in love with her characters, and feel every single emotion they feel. Jen knows how to balance the sexiness, humor, and charm of NA book, and it makes for the perfect read that makes you never want to stop reading. However, as I was reading, I found that Forever with You was different than the other books in the series, as this is by far the most emotional and touching story's Jen has told. I was literally moved to tears while reading this book because there were such beautiful and heart-wrenching scenes.

description

Nick has always been a character of interest to me. He was always very mysterious and quite honestly, kind of a jerk. I knew there had to be more to him because come on...this is Jen Armentrout we're talking about, and she writes the best male characters ever. I was bound to fall in love with Nick, and I did. We a very different side to him, and I loved his humor and caring nature that we never got to see before. Stephanie has also been mentioned before, but unfortunately we never got much about her besides the fact that she, like Nick, prefer the one-time hookup and are not into relationships. Well I absolutely adored Steph. She was hilarious and I loved her brash, no-holds-barred behavior. She had me cracking up so many times! But when things take an interesting turn for both Steph and Nick, something beautiful happens. I can't go into much detail because it's best to go into this book blind. Not knowing how the story will unfold, makes is so much better. It allows you to truly feel every single emotion and really get to know the characters.

“We’ll figure this out. We will. You and I. Together. We can do this.”

There is one scene in particular that is absolutely heartbreaking. I was borderline sobbing because I just couldn't help it. The scene was emotionally-charged and written with a grace few authors could manage. Besides this one scene, Jen does what she does best...tell a wonderful story that is filled with love, sexy-times, and hilarity. The last chapter in this book was a special gift to all long time readers of the series, and I loved every single word of it. I loved seeing my 2 favorite characters go through a very special moment.

Don't miss out on reading this touching, stunning book in the Wait for You series. This book will stay with you forever, and you'll never want to let it go!

Happy reading :)
