Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2): Marissa Meyer Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison--even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner. Wow! This book was amazing! I read Cinder about a month ago and I wasn't sure when I was going to pick up Scarlet. Yes, I really loved Cinder but I feel like sometimes you just have to be in the mood for fairytale retellings, you know? Scarlet is obviously a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, but it still continues with Cinder's story from the first book. I love love love how everything came together!
"A captain always knows where his ship is. It's like a psychic bond."
"If only we had a captain here."
Fan cast of Scarlet: Jane Levy
I love how the story changes perspectives between Scarlet and Cinder and occasionally Kai! I liked Scarlet even better than Cinder. I feel that people can relate more to her. She's so impulsive and isn't afraid to let her emotions show. Which makes sense with the situations she's put in. I like that she tries to fight but at the same time you can tell that everything is sort of taking an emotional toll on her to the point where she just really wants to snap. Cinder is so calm and collected all the time, even in this extreme situations. And that doesn't really change much for this story either. There are two new characters in this book besides them, and they are Carswell Thorne and Wolf! Wolf is definitely not who he seems like in the beginning of the book, which lead to a pretty big twist that I wasn't expecting! Carswell Thorne honestly at first reminded me of my ex boyfriend, lol. He seemed really shallow and sneaky but coming off as super charismatic to people in order to impress them. However, he really grew on me! You can tell he isn't as self-serving as he comes off as. So I'm also really pumped to finally see his love story as well!
Fan cast of Wolf: Tyler Hoechlin
The romance in this book is pretty much between Scarlet and Wolf. They have that kind of forbidden love thing going on, which was definitely intriguing to the story. There wasn't much about Cinder and Kai since they weren't even in the same place. They still thought about each other, though. The romance between Cinder and Kai is so slow-burning that I really can't wait to see what will happen when they finally see each other again. While I do like Scarlet as a character better, I think I like the romance between Cinder and Kai the most. They seriously will be such a great couple one day! Cinder really is trying to save his life in any way she can, even if she has to prove to the entire world that she is the lost Lunar Princess. And Kai is knowingly sacrificing his life for the hope that Queen Levana will leave the people of Earth alone and one day hand over the Letumosis cure.
"I don't see that her being Cyborg is relevant."
I really think this is a fantastic series. I'm so glad I decided to start it! I also am currently in the first quarter of Cress… I currently don't like it as much as Scarlet or Cinder, but I'm thinking it will pick up soon! If you haven't read any of this series yet, I highly recommend it! While it's considered a fairytale retelling, you really don't even think about it being one! It really is a unique series that isn't bounded by the strictures of the old fairytales. So even if you aren't a huge fan of retellings, I'd still recommend this to you!
This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books Release Date: September 22nd 2015
Genre: Young Adult, Horror, Steampunk, Retelling, Historical, Science Fiction, Paranormal, Fantasy Rate:4.5/5 stars stars
Synopsis:
In 1818 Geneva, men built with clockwork parts live hidden away from society, cared for only by illegal mechanics called Shadow Boys. Two years ago, Shadow Boy Alasdair Finch’s life shattered to bits. His brother, Oliver—dead. His sweetheart, Mary—gone. His chance to break free of Geneva—lost. Heart-broken and desperate, Alasdair does the unthinkable: He brings Oliver back from the dead.
But putting back together a broken life is more difficult than mending bones and adding clockwork pieces. Oliver returns more monster than man, and Alasdair’s horror further damages the already troubled relationship.
Then comes the publication of Frankenstein and the city intensifies its search for Shadow Boys, aiming to discover the real life doctor and his monster. Alasdair finds refuge with his idol, the brilliant Dr. Geisler, who may offer him a way to escape the dangerous present and his guilt-ridden past, but at a horrible price only Oliver can pay…
This is the first book that both Cassie and I were able to read together since we were both sent copies, so we thought we would collaborate together about our ideas on the review and the dreamcast. The idea of steampunk Frankenstein is something that grabbed both of our attentions immediately and made us both want to put this on our "most anticipated fall list". The majority of the book takes place post publication of Frankenstein, which is published without an author. Living in a world where people with replacement clockwork limbs are already discriminated against, everyone is in an uproar. When Alasdair reads it, he believes Frankenstein might be based off the night he killed his brother and brought him back to life in the clock tower, but just who wrote it? The characters were well-developed and you could truly feel the grief and guilt Alasdair felt, as well as the anger and frustration Oliver was dealing with throughout the story. Alasdair showed so much naivety regarding who wrote Frankenstein. If you are familiar with Frankenstein, you can probably guess who wrote it so it's not really a spoiler. It seems that Alasdair instinctively knew who wrote the story, but just denied it to everyone and anyone. If he would have just been truthful with himself and other people, it probably would have prevented a whole mess of problems. There were beautiful flashbacks of Oliver and Alasdair that really coincided with how different their relationship was post-reanimation. It would have been nice to get to know Oliver more before the whole ordeal, and we think the flashbacks definitely serve that purpose. While Mary was selfish, manipulative, and unreliable - which was definitely intentional - she added a lot to the story and you can really understand that she is just a deeply disturbed person. Clemence was a brilliant character and she was so easy to love. This definitely is a story that would also be great written in multiple points of view, but you still get to know the characters well from Alasdair's POV.
We both thought the world building was fantastic with this twist put on the classic story of Frankenstein. The writing in this story was excellent and it was so easy to picture the setting of Geneva and Ingolstadt in the 1800's (clockwork style, of course). There were a few slow moments that made some scenes seem a bit monotonous. However, besides that the story's pacing was great. This is a book you obviously will want on your bookshelf - and not just because the cover is completely gorgeous! Undoubtedly, fans of classic novel retellings will absolutely adore this unique spin on Frankenstein. The ending wraps things up nicely, but still leaves it open enough for readers to imagine what is next for the characters. Basically the book can be summed up with this Robert Downey Jr. gif:
Mackenzi Lee holds a BA in history and an MFA from Simmons College in writing for children and young adults. She loves Diet Coke, sweater weather, and Star Wars. On a perfect day, she can be found enjoying all three. She currently lives in Boston, where she works as a bookseller and almost never reanimates corpses. Almost.

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis Publication Date: October 6, 2015
Grace Mae knows madness.
She
keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a
brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those
secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane
asylum.
When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is
banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting
doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her
keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at
crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio
asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have
had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a
killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the
cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in
her own past.
First, let me say...I LOVE THIS COVER!
It captures the book so perfectly! Moving on...
While
this book wasn't exactly what I expected, it still was a very good
novel that will be definitely be a hit among many people. There were
some ups and downs with this book, but overall I did greatly enjoy the
story and its characters. The writing was amazing in my opinion. I
immediately fell in love with the beautiful quality of the words, and
you can easily tell that Mindy McGinnis truly has a gift. I did love the
unique and creative nature of the story as well. Ms. McGinnis
transports you back to the Victorian era. You are immersed in this
setting so deeply that you feel as if you are actually there. Anyone
who knows me, knows that I adore the Victorian era, so this was just a
major win all around for me. I do applaud Ms. McGinnis for giving an
accurate portrayal (or seemingly accurate portrayal) of what it was like
to be a woman in this era. Whereas many authors don't fully show how
objectified women were, Ms. McGinnis makes it part of the story.
Grace
was an utterly fantastic main character, and I loved every single thing
about her. She was strong, relatable, quick-witted, and tough. Grace
has been through unspeakable things, things no woman (or man for that
matter) should ever have to go through. Although she is fueled by her
hate by her family, and is seeking revenge, she never actually lets her
past define her. While you only find out the truth surrounding Grace's
hate toward the middle of the book, you do have your suspicions along
the way. You truly feel for her, and you understand why she is the way
she is. I also loved her development and growth over the course of the
novel. Finally, as I said, Grace was extremely relatable. No matter
what she was going through internally, she always made sure to be there
for others when they needed her. Oh and the best part? NO
INSTA-LOVE!!!! WOO-HOOO!!!
There were a couple reasons I decided
to give this book 3.5 stars instead of 4 (regardless of what the rating
says above...darn you Goodreads for not letting me do half stars!).
First, as I said, this book wasn't exactly what I expected going in. In
that way, it was a bit of a let down. There seemed a mismatch in what
the author wanted to do, and what the author actually set up in the
story. I was expecting dark, gritty, a bit gruesome, and thrilling.
While it had it's gruesome and dark parts, it's just wasn't enough for
what the summary of the book expressed. Additionally, the first part of
this book is very slow. It picks up, which I was extremely grateful
for as this would have been a very different review otherwise, but I
feel like there needed to be some editing in the first part of this
book. Finally, Dr. Thornhollow was a bit of an oddball. I liked him,
but didn't love him. Compared to Grace, he just couldn't compete. I
never was fully able to get a good read on him, and still I feel like I
don't really know him all that well.
Overall, I did very much
enjoy this book, but there was some aspects that could have been
fixed/edited. I would recommend checking this book out, but keep in
mind that the description is a bit misleading. I do think this is worth
checking out though, and I will be interested to see what Ms. McGinnis
writes in the future!
I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Crave the Night (Midnight Breed, #12): Lara Adrian Born and raised to be an emotionless killing machine, Nathan is one of the most lethal Breed vampires in existence. A key member of the Order—an elite group of warriors charged with protecting both mortals and vampires—Nathan executes each mission with flawless precision and a total lack of mercy. Now he must pursue a powerful, hidden enemy. But Nathan’s hard discipline and training are no match for the fierce pull he feels toward a young woman he has no right to desire—a woman of wealth and high social standing who has long been promised to another Breed male, and who may also prove to be the key to rooting out Nathan’s elusive quarry.
Jordana lives a life of glittering privilege as a member of a prominent Breed family in Boston. Surrounded by fine things and fawning admirers, Jordana wants for nothing—until she crosses paths with a dark, intense warrior from the Order and finds herself swept into an impulsive, sizzling kiss that neither of them will forget. As much as she tries to deny her deep feelings for Nathan, Jordana cannot resist the craving to be near him, to break through his forbidding walls and see the man he truly is. But getting close to Nathan will thrust Jordana into a treacherous new world, forcing her to risk all she has and all she knows about herself and her past. And loving this seductive man could be the most dangerous temptation of all.
If you are a fan of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series - I assure you that you will be a huge fan of this series as well. Last year I marathoned all 11 books that were released in the series in the span of less than a month. I'm a huge vampire fan and Lara Adrian really gives them the justice they deserve. If you aren't familiar - the first book in the series is Kiss of Midnight. It's like BDB in the aspect that you don't necessarily have to read the books in order, although it would be helpful. I highly recommend reading this series - it's one of my all-time favorite series. It's an urban fantasy romance series, and I hope this series never stops!
So I can't believe this is the 12th book in this series! I should have definitely paced myself more for the series because now I have to wait so much longer for the upcoming books. Now that the books are about the original warrior's children - I am most interested about reading Lucan's son's story. But until that time comes …
"I came because as soon as we figured out where you might be, nothing would've kept me from finding you. Nothing."
I'm not a huge fan of Jordana - she was really indecisive and that's something I really loathe in a main character for some reason. On the other hand - her best friend Carys was a ball of fire and I wish she was the real focus of this story. However - I know that Carys story is the next Midnight Breed story, so I'm really excited about that! Jordana was really beautiful and nice, but is that enough to make me like a main character? Ehh not really. Nathan was very stoic because of his upbringing and reluctant to be in any sort of relationship, but somehow he finds himself falling in love with Jordana. My love for Nathan knows no bounds but seriously? She kind of has no personality. I don't know if I would have picked Nathan and Jordana to be together. Personally, I'm more of a fan of Nathan and Carys together!
"You're not a blade or an animal, Nathan. Whatever awful things you were forced to
do in your past doesn't define who you are today."
If you haven't read this series yet and you like urban fantasy - I highly encourage you to do so! It is so fun and dramatic, and you can never guess what is going to happen next! Also, it's not cheesy like a lot of romance books have been lately. I already have the 13th book, so I just have to pick it up. This series is definitely flying under the radar, but I think it deserves so much more recognition!

Jocelyn's Waiting On:
Arrows: Melissa Gorzelanczyk Publication Date: January 5th, 2016
Synopsis:
A modern cupid story set in present-day Wisconsin combining the fantastical elements of Greek mythology with the contemporary drama of MTV's Teen Mom. People don’t understand love. If they did, they’d get why dance prodigy Karma Clark just can’t say goodbye to her boyfriend, Danny. No matter what he says or does or how he hurts her, she can’t stay angry with him . . . and can’t stop loving him. But there’s a reason why Karma is helpless to break things off: she’s been shot with a love arrow. Aaryn, son of Cupid, was supposed to shoot both Karma and Danny but found out too late that the other arrow in his pack was useless. And with that, Karma’s life changed forever. One pregnancy confirmed. One ballet scholarship lost. And dream after dream tossed to the wind.
A clueless Karma doesn’t know that her toxic relationship is Aaryn’s fault . . . but he’s going to get a chance to make things right. He’s here to convince Danny to man up and be there for Karma. But what if this god from Mount Olympus finds himself falling in love with a beautiful dancer from Wisconsin who can never love him in return?
Greek mythology plus contemporary drama?! Isn't that enough to have anyone hooked?! This story looks amazing and it's been a long time that I've read anything with greek mythology so I'd say it's about due time!

It's no secret that I'm a huge Colleen Hoover fan, so this is a must read for me. I will literally read anything she writes, and this is said to be her best yet! I've read some early reviews, and it seems like I might be crying like I usually do with her books. Bring on the tissues!
