Synopsis:

Can’t buy me love…

Maddie’s not impulsive. She’s all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment—

She wins!

In a flash, Maddie’s life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she’s talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun…until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now Maddie isn’t sure who she can trust.

Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn’t seem aware of Maddie’s big news. And, for some reason, she doesn’t want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?

Review:

I'm a relatively new fan of Kasie West, but everything I have read from her so far I have enjoyed a great deal! And this book is no exception. I know there are a lot of negative reviews with this book, and I can understand where they are coming from. But personally, I thought this was a cute, light-hearted summer read. As all of her books are, they're quick and fast-paced and easy to read in one sitting. Sure, the story is predictable, but none of her books ever came across to me as an in-depth look at relationships. These books are all about the fun and craziness that goes along with love. And that's what I enjoy the most about her books, this story included!

Maddie was a great MC for this book. She's relatively level-headed and very mature for her age. She believes that success will come from hard work (my kind of girl!), she makes goals for herself to crave the path for her dreams to be attained, and she cares for her family (which means in many ways she's the glue that holds her family together currently). But when Maddie wins the lottery after an impulsive purchase on her birthday, things go a little crazy. Maddie just wants her life to remain normal, and because of this she doesn't tell the one person she's got a crush on...Seth. She does begin to use the money responsibly, but obviously she does get a little bit irresponsible with her winnings as well. I know this is a complaint that others had, but honestly...who wouldn't be a little irresponsible after they won the lottery. We all would like to think that we'll be straight and basically save all of that money for good use in the future. But would we really? I think that Maddie started spending the money how any 18-year-old would. She threw her friend the ultimate party, she went on a shopping spree, etc. The important thing was that she realized what she was doing was irresponsible and wised up! Maddie learns a lot of lessons over the course of the story and that's always something I love about Kasie West books. When the MC learns and grows from their mistakes, she humanizes her characters and they become even more relatable and likable.

Seth was hilarious and I loved him from the start! Together, Maddie and Seth made the perfect couple. His humor balanced well her random facts, and they just were adorable. The romance is light and not the main focus of this novel (despite what the title might imply), but I didn't mind it at all. I loved that Seth was there for Maddie when she truly needed someone, and the whole penny thing was super cute!

I definitely would recommend checking out this book if you're a fan of Kasie West! While you might not enjoy it as much as other books, I honestly loved it. It's fun, light, and a quick read...and it's the perfect way to end your summer!

Happy reading :)

~Cassie
