About the Book:

Title: A Mad Zombie Party (White Rabbit Chronicles #4)
Author: Gena Showalter
Pub. Date: September 29, 2015
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 448 pgs
Rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis:
The enemy has risen from the grave. Together we slayers must stand, or one by one we will fall.

Ali Bell's crew of zombie slayers thought they'd won the war against Anima Industries, the evil company responsible for capturing and experimenting on zombies in an effort to discover the secret to immortality. In the last epic clash, the slayers lost many of their crew and closest friends. But Frosty, the ice man himself, has not recovered from one casualty in particular — the love of his life, Kat Parker.

On the path to self-annihilation, Frosty receives a message from beyond — Kat's spirit returns, insisting he partner with rogue slayer Camilla Marks. Frosty will do anything for Kat. Except that. Camilla's betrayal caused Kat's death.

But when Anima rises from the grave stronger than ever, Frosty, Camilla and all the slayers will have to work together to survive. And one broken slayer will learn that sometimes the line between hate and attraction is blurred... and the road to redemption may mean letting go of the past and grabbing hold of the future.

Review:
The White Rabbit Chronicles was one of my first zombie series, and because of this, it has always had a special place in my heart. While I was happy after the ending of the third book, as Gena ended it on a high note, I still wanted more. So when I saw the announcement that she was writing a fourth book in the series, I was over the moon. Even though this book is in Frosty and Milla's POV, it fit right in with the rest of the books and was the perfect addition to the series. I couldn't put this book down when I started it. From the very first page, Gena pulled you in and never let you go. I simply couldn't get enough of reading about Frosty and Milla. In one word, this book was AMAZING, and everyone who is a fan of this series needs to read this as soon as possible.

“Let your light shine, never look back and live as if today is your last day...because it just might be.”

The one thing that I loved so much about this novel was the fact that it was a journey for the characters in many different ways. Gena captured Frosty's depression and sadness over Kat perfectly, and it was excruciatingly difficult to watch a character I love so much go through something so tragic. This aspect of the book was so well written and beautiful. Few authors can make you feel so strongly about a character, but Gena definitely has that talent. Not only were these beginning chapters written so well, but Frosty's character development over the course of the story was breathtaking. I feel like Gena truly showcased her talents as an author in this story because his character was unlike anything I have ever read. And I loved every single second of it. In the previous books, we only had a vague idea of what Frosty was truly like, but in this novel we are able to understand why Frosty is the way he is, and we get to know him much better. Plus, we find out Frosty's actual name, and it is perfect!

“Scars speak for you. They say you're strong, and you've survived something that might have killed others.”

As much as I wanted to dislike Milla for everything she did in the previous books, I just couldn't help but falling in love with her character as well. She has had such a difficult life, and I admired her strength and general badass nature. She didn't take anything from anyone, and had such a great sass and feisty nature that you can't help but love her! However, the thing that I loved the most about her character was watching her grow over the course of the novel. She feels absolutely terrible about the things she did in the past, and she doesn't think she is worthy of any type of forgiveness. But we get to witness Camilla forgive herself and realize that mistakes should never define a person. I'll admit, when I found out that Camilla was in this book and was going to be Frosty's love interest...well I had my doubts. But let's just say, you'l realize how utterly perfect they are for each other, and will love them together right from the get go.

“Real love never fails, never fades, and the greatest expression of it is giving.”

We get to see all of our favorite characters return, but this truly is Camilla and Frosty's book. Gena never fails to impress me with her ability to balance the supernatural, action, and romance in her books. She never lets one aspect overshadow another, and it makes for a fun, gripping read. The ending of this book however did make me tear up because this series is officially over. Regardless, it was a beautifully perfect ending. I had a huge smile on my face while reading the "letters" and I think any reader will too. Read this as soon as you can because you do NOT want to miss out!!

Happy reading :)

Waiting on Wednesday #22

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Jocelyn's Waiting On:

Stone Field: Christy Lenzi
Publication Date: March 29th, 2016

Synopsis:

In a small town on the brink of the Civil War, Catrina finds a man making strange patterns in her family’s sorghum crop. He’s mad with fever, naked, and strikingly beautiful. He has no memory of who he is or what he’s done before Catrina found him in Stone Field. But that doesn’t bother Catrina because she doesn’t like thinking about the things she’s done before either.

Catrina and Stonefield fall passionately, dangerously, in love. All they want is to live with each other, in harmony with the land and away from Cat’s protective brother, the new fanatical preacher, and the neighbors who are scandalized by their relationship. But Stonefield can’t escape the truth about who he is, and the conflict tearing apart the country demands that everyone take a side before the bloodbath reaches their doorstep.

A historical fiction romance?  Yes please!! I can't think of anything better. I honestly am dying to get this book. Even though this was based off of Wuthering Heights, don't believe I've read anything like this. I hope you all get this on your radar as well.

Cassie's Waiting On:

About The Book:
Title: Down With the Shine
Author: Kate Karyus Quinn
Release Date: April 26th, 2016
Pages: 355
Publisher: HarperTeen

Synopsis:

There's a reason they say "be careful what you wish for." Just ask the girl who wished to be thinner and ended up smaller than Thumbelina, or the boy who asked for "balls of steel" and got them-literally. And never wish for your party to go on forever. Not unless you want your guests to be struck down by debilitating pain if they try to leave.

These are things Lennie only learns when it's too late-after she brings some of her uncles' moonshine to a party and toasts to dozens of wishes, including a big wish of her own: to bring back her best friend, Dylan, who was abducted and murdered six months ago.

Lennie didn't mean to cause so much chaos. She always thought her uncles' moonshine toast was just a tradition. And when they talked about carrying on their "important family legacy," she thought they meant good old-fashioned bootlegging.

As it turns out, they meant granting wishes. And Lennie has just granted more in one night than her uncles would grant in a year.

Now she has to find a way to undo the damage. But once granted, a wish can't be unmade...

Book Review: Eve (Eve, #1)

About The Book:

  Title: Eve (Eve, #1)
  Author: Anna Carey
  Pub. Date: October 4th, 2011
  Publisher: HarperCollins
  Pages: 336
  Rate: 3/5 stars

Synopsis :
Where do you go when nowhere is safe?

Sixteen years after a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth's population, the world is a perilous place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has never been beyond the heavily guarded perimeter of her school, where she and two hundred other orphaned girls have been promised a future as the teachers and artists of the New America. But the night before graduation, Eve learns the shocking truth about her school's real purpose and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she's ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Arden, her former rival from school, and Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust... and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

Review :

What can I say about Eve. I liked it, but at the same time I didn't like it. It kept me interested until the very end, however I think a lot of the reason I was so interested is because the situations I was predicting kept coming true! I know Eve has been published awhile ago, so perhaps you have already read it. I'd love to know if you agree with my opinions on the book.

Fan Cast of Eve:
Danielle Campbell
“You can love anyone. Love is just caring about someone
very deeply.Feeling like that person matters to you,
like your whole world would be sadder without them."

While Eve was naive, she wasn't a stupid character. She was more book-smart, which is definitely an aspect of her that I can relate to. She came off as condescending to almost all people I read that she interacted with. The romance was ok but it didn't leave a long lasting impression on me. I liked Caleb better as a character than I liked Eve. He seemed to care about everyone and was really selfless in his actions. However, I wouldn't say he's a new book boyfriend of mine because he wasn't over interesting to me. I will say that I really like that the book showed that characters learned to love, even though love was seemingly gone and the world didn't want it to exist.

Fan Cast of Caleb:
Jeremy Sumpter
Some parts made no sense, to be honest. The guards that were looking for her said time and time again that they were looking for a girl with long, brown hair. Can someone please tell me why the heck this girl didn't cut her freaking hair!? It couldn't have been that nice because she didn't have a brush with her on the run, I'd imagine it became pretty matted. One thing that I wondered about, but didn't affect my rating was why the heck her hair was brown in the books and red on the cover, like what?! Does anyone know? Does her hair change colors later in the series? Another thing I didn't like about this book was that I feel like I didn't really get to know any of the characters. They were all ok, but I didn't find any of them to be complex, which is how I like main characters in books.

“Happiness is a moment."

Overall, I thought this book was a 3/5 stars. I definitely want to read the next in the series, but I'm waiting for a hardcover to pop up on Book Outlet because I will not pay full price for the next books in the trilogy. I do definitely think that I would have liked this book better had I read it when I was in high school and was going through my really intense dystopian phase. So if you are a really hardcore dystopian fan, you might love this book!

Book Review: Ash & Bramble

About The Book:

  Title: Ash & Bramble
  Author: Sarah Prineas
  Pub. Date: September 15th, 2015
  Publisher: HarperTeen
  Pages: 464
Genre: Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Retellings, Romance
  Rate: 1.5/5 stars

Synopsis :

A prince. A ball. A glass slipper left behind at the stroke of midnight. The tale is told and retold, twisted and tweaked, snipped and stretched, as it leads to happily ever after. But it is not the true Story.

A dark fortress. A past forgotten. A life of servitude.

No one has ever broken free of the Godmother’s terrible stone prison until a girl named Pin attempts a breathless, daring escape. But she discovers that what seems to be freedom is a prison of another kind, one that entangles her in a story that leads to a prince, a kiss, and a clock striking midnight. To unravel herself from this new life, Pin must choose between a prince and another—the one who helped her before and who would give his life for her. Torn, the only thing for her to do is trade in the glass slipper for a sword and find her own destiny.
Review:

I was really looking forward to Ash & Bramble because 1) I do love retellings (even if there are so many nowadays that it is getting a little old), and 2) this said it had a darker twist to it, which I was really looking forward to. Well this is the problem with retellings and my love for them...they're either hit or miss. I either really love them or can't stand them. I don't know why there's no in-between for me, but there isn't. And this novel falls into the "I can't stand it" category. I'm being generous and giving this book 2 stars, because I didn't hate it. There was just too many things that I didn't like to go any higher in my rating.

This book is divided into several parts. The first part was extremely boring and made me want to DNF it, but I wanted to see if the story would get better. My biggest reason for not liking the first part though was the insta-love. These 2 characters, Shoe and Pin (don't even get me started on the names), fall in love even though they don't even have a full conversation with each other. How that's possible, I don't know. But it happened, so I guess we were just supposed to accept it.

description

The second part was looking up for awhile, but then it went back to being boring and tedious. I honestly stopped caring about the characters and what would happen before the halfway point. They were blank and had no personality or anything special that made me like them. Pin/Pen was extremely tiring, while Shoe got on my nerves for multiple reasons.

There were a lot of things in the second part of the book that just didn't add up or make any sense. Whether it was something the characters did or said, or just the time frame...it was confusing. I didn't even realize the time span of this book until 1 scene actually pointed it out. Honestly it didn't seem like years had passed, but apparently they had. Another big thing for me was the dual POV's. While the dual perspectives were actually very well done, and I applaud Ms. Prineas for writing them well, I didn't really like the fact that Pin's chapters were in the 1st person, while Shoe's chapters were in the 3rd person. This wasn't my favorite way to read the story, and it did get a little distracting.

Finally, the ending really just threw me for a loop. After all the back and forth between 2 boys (yes...there's a love triangle), she picks who she wants to be with, but decides to leave while the boy she chooses is recovering from the climatic scenes of the story. When she returns, the boy she chooses says that he didn't know if she would return or not, and she agrees with him. Pin goes onto say that she doesn't like fairy tale endings, there isn't such a thing as happily-ever-after, and that she won't be a wife. BUT...then decides to tell her choice that she experiences "true love" whenever they kiss. And that's how it ends. Well...okay then.

description

Ultimately, this just wasn't my cup of tea and it just didn't live up to my expectations. I had high hopes for the story, but it just fell flat. I'm not giving up on retellings because I love them too much, but I would recommend skipping this one.

Happy reading :)

Waiting on Wednesday #21

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Jocelyn's Waiting On:

The Leaving Season: Cat Jordan
Publication Date: March 1st, 2016

Synopsis:
Middie Daniels calls it the Leaving Season: the time of year when everyone graduates high school, packs up their brand-new suitcases, and leaves home for the first time.

This year Middie’s boyfriend Nate is the one leaving. Nate, who’s so perfect that she can barely believe it. Nate, who makes her better than she is on her own. Nate, who’s promised to come back once he’s finished his gap year volunteering in Central America. And when he does, it’ll be time for Middie to leave, too. With him.

But when a tragedy strikes, Middie’s whole world is set spinning. No one seems to understand just how lost she is… except for Nate’s slacker best friend Lee. Middie and Lee have never gotten along. But with the ground ripped out from under her, Middie is finding that up is down—and that Lee Ryan might be just what she needs to find her footing once more.

This looks like a really amazing contemporary book! It reminds me of A Million Miles Away sort of, except without the military theme. I didn't really like A Million Miles Away, but I think (and hope) that I like this much better. It also doesn't seem to have a theme of lying, which is awesome!

Cassie's Waiting On:

Synopsis:

Oblivion (Lux #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publication Date: December 1, 2015

Oblivion (Lux, #1.5)Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...

It's no secret that Jen Armentrout is one of my favorite authors, and so I definitely can't wait until I can get my hands on this book.  Being able to read the first three books (if you get the Kindle version...if you get the paperback, you only get Obsidian) in Daemon's POV is going to be EPIC!  Why can't it be December?!

Review:

I was pleasantly surprised by this new YA steampunk novel! Anyone who knows me, knows I'm very picky with my steampunk. If it's not done properly, then I won't like it. While this wasn't the best steampunk novel I've read, it was still a great read that's worth checking out. The story did take me a bit to get into, but by the end, I was fully into the story, and am excited to find out what happens next!!

Jacqueline Garlick crafted a wonderfully imaginative world that is rich in it's descriptive elements, and has great characters that you'll easily fall in love with. There was a good balance of steampunk and fantasy elements in this novel, however I am sure that some will say that there was too much steampunk in the story. Nevertheless, because I am very picky with my steampunk, I will say that I could have done with more steampunk in the story. There were parts of the story where I thought it was more of an afterthought then an actual element.

One of the strongest aspects of this story were the lovable characters. All of her characters had such great personalities that made it easy to root for them. They were real, genuine, and not your typical hero/heroine. And this is something I enjoyed a great deal. I wasn't expecting characters like Eyelet and Urlick, but they were unique and fun, and I loved being able to read from both their POV's. Eyelet was such a hoot. She was headstrong, and wasn't going to let anything stop her from accomplishing her goals. Eyelet certainly never gives up, and was definitely amusing throughout the story. She definitely doesn't understand the concept of privacy, but that just makes her even more fun. Urlick is certainly not your typical hero that's drop dead gorgeous, but this just made his character stronger. I loved Urlick and Eyelet's dynamic as a couple, and how they both helepd each other overcome his/her insecurities. They were certainly a refreshing duo to read!

Another wonderful aspect of this story was the setting and storytelling. The setting is so richly described, I felt like I could see the scenes playing out in front of me. I can tell you exactly how everything looks, down to the color of the forest and what the characters are wearing. The story is extremely original, and I highly applaud Ms. Garlick for her creativity with this story. As I said, it did take me a bit to get into the story. I can't quite put my finger on what it was, but I think mainly it was just a little slow in the beginning and I needed to get used to Eyelet's personality. However, once I was farther into the story, I really starting enjoying the story and it was an action-packed adventure!

While this book won't be for everyone, I am definitely looking forward to reading the next in the series, Noir. It is sure to be yet another unique, creativity story that will sweep you away to another world. I'm interested to see where Ms. Garlick takes the story and what will happen next with Eyelet and Urlick! If you're looking for a unique blend of action, adventure, fantasy, and steampunk, this book is perfect for you. Don't miss out!

Happy reading :)

About Jacqueline:

I'm Jacqueline Garlick, author of young adult and new adult fiction. I love strong heroines, despise whiny sidekicks, and adore a good story about a triumphant underdog. (Don't you?)
I love to read, write, paint (walls and paper). I have a love/hate relationship with chocolate, grammar, and technology and would rather hang out with a dog, than a cat. I prefer creating things to cleaning things, and believe laughter is a one-stop-shop solution to all that ails you. You will always find a purple wall (or two) in my house (currently in my writing room), and there may or may not be a hidden passageway that leads to a mystery room. (Okay, so you won't find a hidden passageway, but a girl can dream, can't she?) Oh, and tea. There will always be tea.

My writing style has been described as edgy and rule-breaking, and by some--a touch Tim Burton-esque. Because of this, I am often referred to as the Quentin Tarantino of YA among writing friends.
