Review:

description

That is how a book is written people! Stop everything right now and read this book. I don't care what you're doing, you just need to put everything down and take a couple hours and read this gorgeous, gutting book. Everything about it is perfection, and you will be blown away (once again) by Randi's amazing writing! Honestly, this book is unputdownable...and yes I made up a word specifically for this story because these are the types of things that Randi's stories do to me. With edge-of-your-seat suspense and thrilling plot twists (and boy are there a lot of them), you will not regret picking up Aequus

description

The story picks up right where we left off...Tristan has left and Serena is left with her heart shattered. My heart absolutely broke for Serena during these first couple of moments, and honestly I should have known from the get go that this entire book would play with my heartstrings. Randi weaves such a beautiful tale of love, revenge, and romance. There is just something about her writing that sweeps me away instantly and allows me to truly escape for the entire time I'm reading her gorgeous prose. The pacing is something that really stood out for me in this novel because the story flows perfectly. There is never a dull moment, and you are instantly transported into the amazing world that Randi has so flawlessly created. We get to explore new places and just when you think you can't learn any more new info, we find out so much more! It's exciting to say the least!!

description

But you want to know my absolute favorite thing about this book (and Randi's books in general)? The characters. Randi has crafted truly amazing characters that you instantly connect with. They're relatable and easily gain a special place in your heart. Tristan and Serena are magnificent characters and their development throughout the story is remarkable. Both Tristan and Serena are willing to fight for each other until their dying breaths (is this a hint? I'll never tell...because I'm evil like that). I love being able to read from both of their POVs because it adds so much more to the story. Tristan is just as much of a mess as Serena is after being forced to take the throne next to Freya (aka evil girl trying to break up Tristan and Serena). I loved how vulnerable he was around Serena and it's clear that Serena truly makes him a better person. Their love for each knows no bounds and their banter is classic. Serena is willing to do anything and everything to get back the person she loves. And when they finally come together, their love is electric and sparks fly everywhere. The love they have for each other is palpable. You want to believe with everything in you that Tristan and Serena will have a HEA, but the ultimate question is...will they?

The one character I do want to mention in particular though is Zander because he was seriously hilarious in this book! I loved him when he was introduced in the first novel, Vernal, but in this book his humor and sass is on point! He had me laughing hysterically and there was a nice fourth-wall type thing in one scene that all fans of Randi will appreciate.

There are some very shocking moments in this book that you will never see coming, and there was one death in particular that had me crying and had my heart breaking. I actually dropped my Kindle because I didn't think I read the scene correctly, but alas I did. And the story is now short one character that no on will expect to die. This was my face:

description

But most importantly the entire ending will leave you begging to have Nox in your hands as soon as possible. I didn't want to believe that Randi would end the book that way, but who was I kidding...she loves to torture us! I don't know how I'm going to make it until November.

Do not miss out on this amazing book! With plenty of twists and turns, a heart-pounding and explosive romance, and characters that incredibly well written, Aqeuus has it all, and is sure to be a hit! You will not be disappointed with a story this epic!

Title: A Crown of Wishes (Star Touched Queen #2)

Pages: 352
Rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis:
Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom’s enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Together, they’ll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes—a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels.

Every which way they turn new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there’s nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

description

Roshani Chokshi has written another winner with A Crown of Wishes! She blew me away with her first novel, The Star-Touched Queen, but with this "companion" novel, Ms. Chokshi truly surpassed my expectations (and they were pretty high). I will admit that I was a bit hesitant to read this one because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my love of the first story, but 2 chapters in and I was hooked! While this is a companion novel, and you certainly don't need to read the first book in order to understand what is going on. I would highly encourage you to read the first one though because 1) it's AMAZING, and 2) I liked the continuity and the subtle ties into the first story that ultimately led to a conclusion of sorts for the series in general.

“I donned my armor, lining my eyes with kohl until they were dark as death and patting crushed rose petals on my lips until they were scarlet as blood.”

Ms. Chokshi has an utterly mind-blowing writing style, one that instantly transports you to a far away location that you never want to leave. Everything is richly described and the scenes truly come alive with every sentence she writes. Her characters are extremely well developed and their characterization is on point throughout the entire story. She even makes you fall in love with the secondary characters as they play bigger roles than you originally think. Ms. Chokshi seamlessly weaves action, adventure, heart-pounding thrills, and romance into her story, and it is perfectly done. The mythology is absolutely fantastic and is easily one of my most favorite parts of the story and series in general! Suffice to say, she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!

description

Gauri and Vikram as perfect as our two leads for this story. I will tell you that this is a very different story than in The Star-Touched Queen. So I would urge you to check this one out even if you weren't a fan of Maya's story. Gauri has a unique personality, one that is vastly different than Maya, and it made for an interesting story. Together, Gauri and Vikram as the ultimate love/hate relationship and I loved watching them having to work together and slowly fall for each other. I'm always a sucker for those types of relationships, and theirs is excellently written! They have a hilarious banter, and I seriously loved every single second of it.

“He turned to me, mischief glinting in his eyes. “How

do they celebrate good fortune in Bharata? In Ujijain, we kiss.”
“Look elsewhere.”
“Are you sure? You spend an awful amount of time looking at my
lips.”
“That’s only because I’m horrified at the sheer idiocy of the words
leaping out of them.”

I will say that some of the more heart-pounding moments where their lives were "in danger" were thrilling, but at the same time I never actually thought something was going to happen. Maybe that was just me being hopeful, but I also knew that there was no way something could happen. But the few times this happened, the scenes were brief, so it didn't take away anything from the story for me. I did like the pace of the relationship between Gauri and Vikram, however, it did seem kind of quick when they realized they actually cared for each other (it seemed to be one of those 1 second they hate each other and then the next they love each other). I was shipping them hard though from the get go, so personally I didn't mind it that much.

“I never dared to hope for someone who challenged and respected me, knew me at my worst and still coaxed out my best. And yet I had found that in the unlikeliest of places and most inconvenient of people. Wasn’t that enough to fight for? Could I live with knowing that I’d left him standing in the shadows . . . waiting for me? I couldn’t. And that was all the answer I needed.”

The plot is an exciting competition, and really drove the story forward. I was excited to see just how everything would play out and what "wishes" they would receive. There was one secondary characters (Aasha) that I would love to read more about! I feel like her story needs to be told, so I'm really hoping that Ms. Chokshi decides to write another book set in this world. As I said, the mythology is expertly done and it some of the best I have ever read (especially since it's so well developed...and understandable...only by the second book).

description

I would highly recommend checking out this new novel by Roshani Chokshi as it is one that is not to be missed! There is so much to love, from well crafted mythology to perfectly written characters to a thrilling adventure. Add this to your TBR now because it will easily become one of your favorites for 2017!

Happy reading :)

ARC Review: Bang

About The Book:

  Title: Bang
  Author: Barry Lyga
  Pub. Date: April 18th, 2017
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
  Pages: 304
Genre: Young Adult, Realistic Fiction, Contemporary
  Rate: 4/5 stars

Synopsis :

A chunk of old memory, adrift in a pool of blood.

Sebastian Cody did something horrible, something no one--not even Sebastian himself--can forgive. At the age of four, he accidentally shot and killed his infant sister with his father's gun.

Now, ten years later, Sebastian has lived with the guilt and horror for his entire life. With his best friend away for the summer, Sebastian has only a new friend--Aneesa--to distract him from his darkest thoughts. But even this relationship cannot blunt the pain of his past. Because Sebastian knows exactly how to rectify his childhood crime and sanctify his past.

It took a gun to get him into this.

Now he needs a gun to get out.

Review:

"I never ask people about their families or their pasts.
Because then they would ask me about mine."

It takes a true visionary to take such an important and sensitive topic and tackle it in such a polished way. That's exactly what Mr. Lyga does in his new novel. Bang follows 4-year-old Sebastian while he pointed a gun at his 4-month-old sister and shot her at point-blank range, killing her instantly. Ten years later, Sebastian is ready to end the suffering he caused by shooting himself with a handgun. When Sebastian meets a new neighbor who is around the same age as him that he is attracted to, he doesn't change his mind, but instead decides to put his suicide off for a little while longer. Until when? He doesn't know, but the voice in his head will let him know when it's time.

"- The voice says nothing, but its silence tells me everything."

My heart ached so profoundly for Sebastian. I felt pangs of guilt reading his thoughts. Carrying that burden since four years of age, Sebastian was tormented by himself, by his classmates, and maybe most importantly - the split of his parents. Sebastian is an extremely strong character. He might not be handling his pain the best way, but how does a 14-year-old handle that kind of suffering? As an almost School Psychologist, it seems like Sebastian definitely suffers from PTSD. It is clear during times when the shooting is brought up. While he is usually calm on the outside, just the mention sometimes makes him shutdown or verbally act out. He definitely does not like to talk about it. When his best friend goes to camp for the summer, Sebastian believes it is almost time to kill himself. However, when he meets Aneesa, his plans change. Whether it's just hanging out or making pizza - Sebastian suddenly has things he is looking forward to in his life. He finds himself telling Aneesa things he's never told anyone before. Being a Muslim girl in a predominantly white neighborhood, Aneesa is dealing with conflicts of her own right now, but she is emotionally there for Sebastian in all the ways that are important. Sebastian starts having feelings for Aneesa, but what kind of feelings are they? And does she feel the same way? Aneesa is a beautiful character inside and out, as is Sebastian. Mr. Lyga crafts their dynamic in such a great way, they are characters that will truly be remembered!

This is a strong book about family, grief, loss, and hope. With blunt and beautiful writing, Bang easily became one of my favorite novels of 2017. This is the first novel I have ever read by Mr. Lyga, and I can assure you that it won't be my last. If you like books about important topics, add this one to your TBR! Sebastian will be a character that stays with you long after you finish the last page, trust me.

Thank you to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for providing
this book in exchange for my honest review.

Book Review - Frostblood (Frostblood Saga, #1)

About The Book:

  Title: Frostblood (Frostblood Saga, #1)
  Author: Elly Blake
  Pub. Date: January 10th, 2017
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
  Pages: 376
  Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Romance
  Rate: 3/5 stars

Synopsis :

The frost king will burn.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.

Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.

Review:

"Affairs between fire and frost rarely end well."

At first glance, this looks eerily similar to any YA fantasy that you may have read in the past few years. And the reality is, the first half of the book is very much like your cookie-cutter YA fantasy. You have a love triangle, you have rebellion, and you have your character who is different yet very very important to the entire kingdom. Your outcast is Ruby, a teenage girl who is similar to other YA heroines except she has the power to wield fire. Ruby lives in a kingdom that is ruled by frost, so when the kingdom raids her village looking for firebloods, her mother is killed and she is taken to prison. There she is broken out by rebel frostbloods, wanting her help at destroying the throne.

A big gripe that I have with this book is that I feel like the description totally ruins the climax of this story. She doesn't get captured until close to the middle of the book, and you already know it's coming based on the description. As I was reading I kept wondering "when is this going to happen". I think that if that was omitted from the description I would have been enjoying the present in the story rather than expecting something to happen. For me the beginning was boring, because I kept waiting for her to get captured and fight in this tournament. I feel like the tournament could have been a great part of the book, but it was hastily described and it felt like it was passed over carelessly.

I must admit, there were a few shocking turns in this book that I did not see coming. The farther the book progressed, the more this book seemed to hold its own in the fantasy world. It was becoming more and more unique by the page, and I really liked that. The romance Ruby finds herself in is swoonworthy. Arcus developed from your common brooding male protagonist into a distinctive persona. I think I'll continue with this series because of how much better it got towards the end. This book is obviously for fans of books like Red Queen and the Throne of Glass Series because it embodies them so much. Have you read Frostblood yet? What are your thoughts?!

Sure, her impoverished existence isn’t desired by most, but her ability to manipulate people’s emotions helps her to blend into the shadows of an unforgiving city. When hideous creatures threaten her life, a surly but gorgeous stranger shows up revealing a world she didn’t know existed. She refuses to put up with his rude, arrogant attitude, but how do you dismiss a warrior angel? And does she really want to when his stormy gaze sends delicious thrills straight to her core?
Cam is one of the most ruthless Power angels in the fight against evil. His devotion to kill demons has made him a celebrated warrior in the Angel Realm, even though his motivation stems from grief. When he is assigned to train and protect a half-angel just coming into her abilities, his rage is unparalleled. Until he realizes Thea isn’t like any others. She stirs a carnal passion in him that he can’t shake. He never counted on her being so beautiful… so fierce… so most definitely his.
Claimed by Power is the first book in the Empire of Angels series, a paranormal alpha angel romance series. If you’re a fan of alpha heroes, powerful heroines, paranormal worlds and falling in love, Zoey Ellis’ riveting, sexy tale is perfect for you.
About the end: Although this book can be read as a standalone, Cam and Thea’s story does continue over the next two books.
Sexual scenes and strong language included. Not suitable for readers under 18.
EXCERPT:
“What exactly are my powers?” Thea asked
The angel stood up. “Not now. It’s time to go. You have your answers.”
Frustrated, she exhaled loudly. She went to her wardrobe and grabbed a bra, top, and another pair of jeans. The angel turned away, allowing her to dress. She eyed him from behind. So angels were real. And they were handsome and powerful and stern. Nothing like she would have ever imagined them to be. He couldn’t even crack a smile and yet mocked her like a child. Were all angels like that? Maybe he didn’t like humans.
“At least tell me why they sent you,” she said, smoothing down her top. “Why you?”
“Why not me?” he said, almost in a growl. “Who would you prefer?”
“I don’t know,” Thea said, lifting her shoulders. “Someone able to smile once in a while?”
He turned to face her, his plain expression flavored with annoyance. “I’m not here to entertain you. You need someone to train you and help you learn how to control your abilities. I’m the best there is. You should be honored.”
Thea shook her head, annoyed. Trained? Like a puppy? Not happening. Especially not by this man, who’d been abrupt with her from the start, despite his careful treatment of her wounds. “I should be honored? Honored that I was attacked by those creatures? Honored that I almost got ripped apart? Honored that you had to come and save me, a poor damsel in distress?”
His face hardened with each word she said, but she couldn’t give a fuck.
“I don’t need to be saved by a warrior who can’t stop the horrors happening in this city every day. Or by a God that keeps himself hidden from those he’s supposed to inspire? People are raped and drugged and killed every day; where are you then? Where is He then? I’ve gotten this far without the help of you or God, and I’ll be fine to continue without you.”
The angel’s stance didn’t change. The only indication of his agitation was in the grounding of his jaw. “You’re being irrational. If I was able to find you here, the demons will find you here. You cannot escape them. Pack. Now.”
“No.” She grabbed her phone. “You go. Thanks very much, but I’ll be fine.”
With a low grunt of frustration, the angel grabbed her around the waist quicker than she would have thought possible. He flew up to the ceiling, his rock-like arm digging into her stomach, pressing her against his chest. He swept his free hand over the length of the room. The room began to glow and then burst into flames, smoke eating up the remaining air.
“No!” She struggled to get out of his arms while her home and everything she owned burned.
He leapt out of the window, holding onto her as he flew over the city.
